VARIOUS SIZES (2024)

These fun potholders were created for the three-year-old classes at my children's preschool. When asked to do a project with the kids for their Christmas fundraiser, I just knew I wanted to incorporate fabric and quilting in any way I reasonably could.

THE PROCESS

Each child was given a rectangular piece of solid colored fabric and their choice of heat set fabric crayons in various colors. With only the little instruction of "draw or scribble whatever you'd like," their creativity flew off the fabric and each drawing was so unique and energetic. I knew from the beginning that I would cut up their artworks in order to patchwork them, but if there were specific figural references or special vignettes within a drawing, I did my best to preserve them. This is the age where kids are just learning how to actualize a form through drawing, and as a former art therapist, seeing these children in their budding stages of artistic development was very exciting! Each child was able to tell me their favorite color which was incorporated into the overall color theme of the patchwork, backing, or binding. Each potholder was custom straight-line quilted and finished with a little "love heart" tag, at my daughter's request.
